I enjoyed the article but for new film makers wondering on funding and their success, I wished you had included that they are backed by Guggenheim partners, which is a financial access that most filmmakers or upcoming productions don’t have access to. Even as indie, this group had an advantage and opportunity to curate in the way they did.

Hi Christine, Norma, and Robert. I agree that Christine, you wrote a moving article, and always do, but I also agree with you Norma and Robert. I am more interested in seeing each of your projects than the output of A24. I am a Producer/Writer without major connections but have run an International Filmmakers Organization and a Sales & Marketing Company that sold films around the world. I am working on new ways to fund low budget, independent films and get them out to the world. I want to work with talented filmmakers. If any of you are attending Cannes this year, maybe we could meet in person.

Using the term “scrappy” is a misnomer. Sure, “they weren’t moguls,” but yet, they had; “industry experience (think finance, distribution, and indie production)” — but what filmmakers were they giving “creative freedom” to? Within their first three films they had names! Both Roman and Sophia Coppola. I don’t see them as scrappy filmmakers. They are royalty in the industry. Maybe not within the Hollywood studio bubble, but nonetheless, I’m a filmmaker too, but not nearly in their circle. Remember, it’s about “Who You Know” in this business and they obviously had some high ranking “who-do-you-knows” in their circle. So it’s not like any three filmmakers with industry experience can do what A24 has done. I certainly applaud them for getting great films out there. But maybe their influence can lift up others who don’t have an “in” somewhere in the industry. There are so many talented filmmakers with few to no access the way they had it.

Nonetheless, this is a great article and we all need to revel in the fact that A24 exists and use that as motivation to create our own circles of influence. Maybe develop our own distribution system within those circles. Because we all know that theatrical releases have gone downhill due to fewer people going to the movies since the pandemic, so they are hungry for newcomers bringing their own feisty new stories!

Speaking of not going to the theaters...I went to see "Sinners" by Ryan Coogler yestersay and, woah! Everyone needs to see the brilliance of this young director who has so much talent! I'm glad he's had the path to get him to where he is. Sinners was a masterclass in filmmaking and storytelling!
